Zithromax (or Azithromycin) is a semisynthetic antibiotic, the first representative of azolides group slightly different in structure then classical macrolides. Zithromax is produced by a pharmaceutical company “Pliva” (Croatia).
In addition to increased resistance to the action of hydrochloric acid, Zithromax, compared with Erythromycin, has improved pharmacokinetic properties and a broader spectrum of antimicrobial activity. In particular, Zithromax, to a greater degree than erythromycin, is able to penetrate through the cell membrane of gram-negative microorganisms and to show well-defined activity against H.influenzae, as well as to act on some representatives of Enterobacteriaceae family.
Like other macrolides, this drug mainly has bacteriostatic effect, but thanks to the ability to create very high intracellular concentrations on many pathogens inside cells, it can act bactericidally. The death of M.pneumoniae happens within 5 days, due to the slow growth of these pathogens.
The drug in tablets is prescribed for treatment of complications of chronic obstructive lung disease caused by pneumococcus, hemophilic bacteria and other pathogens. It should be taken once a day during 3 days.
